Mother’s Day Celebration, Mrs. Janet Craig’s Kindergarten, Maple Elementary

mothersday4It’s May! The weather is warming up, the end of the school year is in sight, and the Kindergarteners in Mrs. Craig’s class at Maple Elementary have been hard at work. Yes, they have been mastering all of the important Kindergarten standards such as counting to 100, writing upper and lower case letters correctly, learning sounds of letters and reading sight words. With Mrs. Craig’s help, the students have also been preparing for a very special event: The Mother’s Day Celebration!

Janet Craig has been teaching Kindergarten at Maple Elementary for 12 years. This May, she hosted her 12th Mother’s Day Celebration, for the Mothers, Grandmothers, or other special people in the lives of her Kindergarten “friends”. Mrs. Craig’s students started weeks ahead to prepare favors and entertainment for their guests at the Mother’s Day Celebration.

This event was highly anticipated by the Kindergarten students and their guests. Many students chose to wear their fanciest clothes for the occasion–the girls wore summer dresses and sparkly shoes, there may even have been few boys wearing dress shirts and ties. The morning of the celebration was spent organizing the student’s gifts and readying the classroom for twice as many people as usual.

Mrs. Craig’s mother, Janet, is always in attendance and stood in for any guest that cannot attend. The students present their special guests with crowns, nametags and personalized art that they have spent weeks creating. Next, they performed their animated and energetic songs, and then it was time for refreshments! Juice, punch, cakes, goldfish and candies were offered on a table in the hallway. During snack time, Moms, Grandmas and special guests were invited to express to their student how proud they are, how much they’ve learned, how they’ve grown this school year. There are always tears of joy, and plenty of tissues passed around.

mothersday2While the lessons learned by students during the Mother’s Day Celebration are not included in the Indiana Academic Standards, they are essential life lessons learned: how to speak publicly, how to be kind and thoughtful to others, how to listen, how to sing, have fun and laugh. In Mrs. Craig’s classroom, all of this happens, and more!
